Joy is a dedicated Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) working in primary care, where she plays a key role in a collaborative family practice reshaping the patient experience in the community. With a passion for making health resources more inclusive and effective, she has spent years developing accessible and sustainable exercise programs to support the well-being of all Nova Scotians. By bridging the gap between clinical care and community wellness, Joy empowers individuals with the knowledge and confidence to take charge of their health. Committed to both the primary and secondary prevention of disease, she believes that credible, community-based initiatives are essential in helping people make informed decisions about their well-being.

Meet Renée, a dynamic and entrepreneurial professional with a passion for enhancing community well-being. Currently running her own business, Real Life Solutions Consulting & Support in Halifax, NS, Renée founded this innovative venture during a transitional period between academic pursuits, showcasing their entrepreneurial spirit and adaptability.
Before venturing into RL Solutions, Renée gained valuable experience as a student. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from Saint Mary's University, in 2021. Currently, Renée is pursuing a Juris Doctor and a Master’s in Public Administration at Dalhousie University. This dual-degree program serves as a testament to her commitment to not only navigate the legal intricacies but also to understand the broader administrative and policy contexts that shape our society.
In addition to their professional achievements, Renée is an active yoga teacher and Lululemon Ambassador, embodying a commitment to holistic well-being. Beyond their professional and academic pursuits, Renée is a dedicated community member involved in the participation of various advisory committees for anti-racism and inclusivity. Renée co-authored the African Nova Scotian Pathways to Port Industry Report and served as a panellist for the 2022 UN International Day for Peace at Saint Mary's University.
In embracing the unexpected and turning it into an entrepreneurial endeavour, Renée exemplifies resilience, creativity, and a commitment to making a positive impact both professionally and within the community.

Korede is a dedicated healthcare professional and community advocate with over a decade of experience in health and wellness. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Master’s in Physiotherapy from Dalhousie University and is currently a third-year medical student at the same institution. Korede worked as a physiotherapist for six years across various settings, including community health, private clinics, orthopedic inpatient care, and post-surgical rehabilitation. His work has focused on patient-centered care, chronic pain management, and physical rehabilitation.
As a founding member of the Black Wellness Cooperative, Korede has played an integral role in promoting physical well-being within the African Nova Scotian community. He has facilitated exercise classes, led health education sessions, and supported wellness initiatives through program development and public speaking engagements. He also serves as a facilitator for the Run with Dere run club, encouraging community engagement through movement.
Korede’s leadership extends to his roles on the boards of Doctors Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Association, where he advocates for equity in healthcare and contributes to systemic change. His volunteer work with the NS Brotherhood Initiative and other grassroots organizations reflects his passion for accessible, culturally informed care.
In his free time, Korede enjoys photography, running, and staying active. He brings a unique blend of clinical experience, academic knowledge, and community engagement to every role and looks forward to continuing to serve and uplift those around him through medicine.

As a Legacy Ambassador for Lululemon, he has promoted wellness and community development. He founded ELITE 8, a high-performance program combining mentorship and advanced training for athletes, and created Smart Coach Solutions—an innovative football analytics platform that empowers coaches with data-driven insights to optimize performance.

Melanie was born Antigonish, Nova Scotia and grew up in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Melanie has since coached and competed in weightlifting and CrossFit at a National level. The passion (and need) for health and wellness in her own life is what led Melanie to assist in the creation of the BWC. Melanie joined the Provincial Government in 2021 as a Workplace Resolution Consultant and is now the Senior Advisor for EDIA at the Public Service Commission. In all her roles, from her profession, to sport, to family life she works to create an equitable, inclusive, and safe environment for all. This process includes teaching, coaching, and most importantly creating opportunities and the space for dialogue. Melanie is a very proud mother of two, and a breast cancer survivor.

Born and raised in Halifax, Bradley is deeply connected to community development, carrying forward the legacy of his grandfather, Delmore Buddy Daye. His journey from professional sports—playing and coaching football at the university and professional levels—to shaping values-based leadership has made him a sought-after guide for teams navigating meaningful change.
Bradley’s work is rooted in reciprocity, community, and love. He continues to give back through board leadership and mentorship in Halifax’s North End.

Lauren is the Executive Director, Strategic Initiatives with African Nova Scotian Affairs and leads the work on the province’s Land Titles Initiative, which helps residents in five historical African Nova Scotian communities, gain clear title to their land. Lauren previously worked in private practice and served as the Project Coordinator of Access Legal Help NS, which offered pro bono summary legal advice to Nova Scotians living in poverty, and to others facing barriers in gaining access to justice. She currently serves on the Boards of the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia, the Black Wellness Co-operative and is on the Schulich School of Law’s IB&M Advisory Committee. Lauren frequently guest lectures at the Schulich School of Law and in 2023, was an Assistant Professor for the new course: Special Topics on African Nova Scotians and the Law. Lauren completed her Bachelor of Science (Kinesiology) degree from Dalhousie University in 2007 and received her Juris Doctor Degree (Health Law and Policy specialization) from the Schulich School of Law in 2011. She was called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 2012.

As a twice published novelist and award-winning screenwriter she brings years of storytelling experience to what she does and weaves her own life experiences, struggles, and triumphs into what and how she presents. She is a captivating and inspired speaker and has carved out a niche for herself sharing her journey of self-acceptance as a woman of colour through addiction, recovery, loss and grief to finally becoming a successful and sought-after Yoga Teacher and community leader. Her gift is in being able to humanize and personalize challenging and sometimes uncomfortable topics so that people can truly see themselves in the work of making change in their lives and beyond.
Her ongoing work as DE&I educator and speaker fall under her newly formed company NM Creative Inc. where she continues to teach and inspire people to actively make change for the better within their organizations and communities through the lens of embodied leadership, which looks at how we can show up more fully for ourselves and others. By bringing a unique lens to this subject matter, and through her gift of story, groups are left feeling curious, open and inspired.

Asha is a full time lawyer practicing in the city of Halifax and a co-founding member of the BWC. When she is not working, you can find Asha working out at the gym, running or teaching group classes at Move East.

Dawn is a multi-disciplinary aerialist and former elite trainer at the École Nationale du cirque de Montréal. She is the co-owner of Breaking Circus and one of the co-founding members of the BWC.
